Helping the Challenged Learner – is often referred to as “the struggling student.”  Let’s identify insidious cognitive skills learning gaps – are they severe enough for special services placement?

Let's now review what can be done for the challenged learner with multiple learning gaps. They may be minor, and not require special services placement. You can help with the remediation yourself and with a qualified diagnostician specialist.  Importantly, you should overcome feelings of embarrassment or self-recrimination.

Formal standardized testing diagnostics with a complete evaluation are critically important to determine how your child processes information visually and auditorally, plus how he conceptualizes information.

Four psychological-physical domains must be tested to begin compliance with Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (2004 reauthorization of IDEA): cognitive, behavioral, physical, and developmental. Turnbull, Stowe, Huerta. (2007). Free and appropriate public education: Love Pub.

Now that you understand visual and auditory memory processing components from the earlier tabs, we will recommend independent evaluations administering the accompanying tests from the Woodcock-Johnson Psycho-Educational Battery (WJ)(Riverside Pub./Houghton Mifflin/Harcourt), Wechsler Scale of Intelligence (WISC) Wechsler, D., Pearson Educational/Clinical Assessments., and the Detroit Tests of Learning Aptitude (DTLA-4) Hamm ill, D., ProEd Pub. Only with a complete profile and evaluation can the student be remediated with the tools available on the marketplace.

Begin with the administration of the Woodcock-Johnson Brief Intellectual Ability (Riverside Pub./Houghton Mifflin/Harcourt). Only a certified/licensed professional diagnostician can administer these.  This can be done through your child's school or with a private professional.  (See Clinical and Special Needs Assessment Catalog).

Without illegal labeling, through these diagnostics and evaluations it can be determined if your child is eligible for placement to receive special education public school services based upon IDEA 2004 anti discrimination law. The school IEP team identifies the student's strengths and weaknesses and defines long term goals and specific objectives for the student's educational program. Key to placement is early identification.

A helpful website is the Special Education Advisor, which details through classification articles the various learning challenges and solutions. (

Now, if interested, let's go review behavior problems and motivational issues.
